Howdy,
  The best way I know to wipe drives is to use dban.
   http://www.dban.org/
 This is a small program and will wipe to DOD specifications, if you
want.  It is simple and works well.  It won't test Ubuntu capability at
the same time, but does the wipe really well.  It seems to follow the
UNIX philosophy of doing one thing well.
