Howdy,
  Well, one reason I have seen recently has to do with XFS.  On ubuntu,
if the root filesystem is XFS, the installer recommends that you install
lilo instead of GRUB.  It say that sometimes grub fails to boot systems
from XFS.  I have not tracked down the error, or really worried about
it.  XFS is a good performing filesystem and I use it on some systems.
