Not sure about Question 1, sorry. But about Question 2. I would
highly, highly recommend colo4dallas http://www.colo4dallas.com. The
company I work for was with The Planet for several years as their
service continued to decline (including outages, fewer noc techs on
hand for remote reboots, etc. as well as a lack of more than 1 working
crash cart in the entire colo). Anyway, a Planet sales rep called us
one day saying he was our rep (even though we had never heard of him,
apparently our rep had left) and he told us that our contract had
expired about a year ago, they just noticed, and we would need to
renew at triple our current rates! When we said we were going to
colo4dallas (we had all ready looked into them) and their rates were
lower than what we were currently paying, he said he could cut us a
deal and only double our rates. He told us we would have downtime if
we went anywhere else and when we told him that we had just had over 2
hours downtime at The Planet no more than 2 months earlier, he didn't
really know what to say.
Anyway, we have been with Colo4Dallas ever since. The company I work
for has a full cabinet with 1 Mbps "premium" (I don't think they even
do 1Mbps anymore) and 20 Mbps Cogent "non-premium". I also have a 2U
server of my own that I collocate there (I just rent the 2U space with
100 GB per month transfer). Never had any downtime and only one
fairly small price increase (due to power) over about 3 years. They
have excellent response and customer service and really will go above
and beyond if you need "remote hands" to help out with stuff in case
you don't want to drive out.
Also, as a side note, whatever you do, stay away from CI Host. I have
know a few people who worked there and basically it is no better than
"someone with a T1 to their garage". Apparently their idea of
"enterprise power" is to daisy chain $10 power strips one into another
down a row of racks.
Sorry this was so long, but I hope it helps.
Preston
