What kind of filesystem? Does it just show up as a generic media
player type device?

Well i cannot recommend anything as my experience has only been with
one device. I have used a 60 gig video ipod, 5th gen i think. I used
it mostly with amarok, but i have also used it with exaile, banshee,
rhythm box, and songbird. Most of them recognized it right out of the
box and i just used it.
