Thanks to all of you who responded to my post.  Your advice has been
very useful!  I have looked at Inkscape and Skencil among others.  In
the process of investigating Inkscape I found this site
(http://symbolik.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/landscaping-with-inkscape/ )
which encourages me to use Inkscape.
