[NTLUG:Discuss] Thunderbird stopped talking to Firefox?!?

Have you tried running Thunderbird form the command line? Open a
terminal window and type "thunderbird" to start. Then do the things you
do and check the terminal window for messages. You will likely see what
is wrong.
