Manufacturers don't specify the chipset used in a particular model 
because they will often change the chipset without changing the model 
number.

You can often find lists of compatible devices associated with a 
particular driver although they may not be very up to date.

Another tactic is check product reviews that mention Linux 
compatibility.  For example:

But, keep in mind that the product you buy could be a different revision 
than the one someone else found to be compatible.
