Sudden crashes of the X server CAN be difficult to see and diagnose.

My recommendation.  From a vc, login as root, and change to runlevel 3
(type: init 3)

Then logout, login as your user account and type: startx

Then do whatever you like to do under X Windows.... and when it crashes,
look at whatever info might show up on the vc you were logged in at.

Just something to try...

This might not be easy to fix... (just fyi)
