You might be surprised as to what a cheap lense clean will do for a
CD drive! If some funky encoding doesn't bugger up the audio likely
problems that I've seen are a dirty [LASER] lense or a misaligned
LASER/lense assembly.

CD drives are cheap enough that the later can be taken care of by a
little trip to your local computer store.

In a computer case, dust can be a real problem, especially for LASERs
getting focused to a fine point to read digital data. This has been
a problem for me with older CD drives. I little cleaning with a proper
cleaner doesn't hurt.

Even in brand new DVD players, a dirty lense can be a problem. In one
unit we've had at home, it would take several tries to get a DVD to load.
On the off chance that the lense came from the factory somewhat dirty,
I got a cheapie CD drive cleaner from Wally World. It worked just fine
and the DVD player worked perfectly afterwards.
