I think you might be correct about some non standard Microsoft extension to the UPnP standard. I installed a fuppes UPnP server, and my set top box couldn't even find it, let alone complain about codecs etc. Of course since I don't have any other UPnP clients to test it with, it might not be configured correctly anyway.
