The Ubuntu 9.04 CD has memtest on it.  If you're thinking about loading 
Ubuntu, you can test before you install.  If the memory is good, then 
you can figure out how to save off the user data from the Win98 
partition.  (Hopefully, the user was smart enough to keep track of where 
all the important stuff was put!)
