As one last gasp I reseated the memory and ran the memory test again - 
no errors after 19 iterations - looked good, eh?
Linux install went swimmingly until - well it got nearly finished and 
froze never to move again - sigh
After installing a new memory stick (removing the old one), everything 
is golden - so far - on a "wait and see if there are any other issues" mode.

PS: As reported earlier, the disk enclosure to copy data to a Linux box 
worked well
PPS:  Interesting side note - I installed the old disk (the one with MS 
still on it) as slave on the secondary IDE channel, Linux was installed 
on the master on the primary IDE channel.  I didn't ask Linux to set up 
a dual boot, but it did (GRUB)??
