Yes, SSH via putty is how I currently do things.  The context of the 
question though is for Microsoft Windows users who are by nature 
GUI-centric with the examples of VNC and xwindow.  Yes there is webmin 
also.  This is good for managing services but what about managing needed 
security updates on the server itself via remote control or display of 
the desktop.
