I second this recommendation, I have used debian, redhat (and centos),
and ubuntu extensively on servers (among others)... and they are all
quite good, but in your case I think going with 9.10 and upgrading to
10.04 LTS is a good plan. Generally your distro / os is dictated by
requirements (hardware / development / support / etc) but if you just
need an "appliance" or a commodity ftp / dns / whatever, then ubuntu
works as well as any.
