I wrote this to my other listserv, and got no response. My issue may be
related
to yours. Here's what I wrote:

Subj: "new" motherboards & "new" kernels

  OK,

By "new" kernels I mean 2.6.30 or later
                      "old" kernel: 2.6.24 or older
By "new" motherboards I mean those with SATA/PCI-express,
one IDE port
"old" have no SATA/PCI-express and two IDE ports
An "old" disk drive is IDE or non-SATA

          Thru extensive testing today :

                          1) An old kernel on an old drive will boot up
with a new motherboard

                          2) A new kernel on an old drive will boot up
on an old motherboard

                          3) A new kernel on an old drive will NOT boot
up on a new motherboard

Is there some trick to perform on new motherboards that I'm
missing? My new
motherboard is an ASUS M3A76-CM.

Different distros have different version nomenclature for packages, in
particular,
for xorg-x11; but we're all on the same page when it comes to kernel
versions.
I am just a consumer. A retired software engineer. I am engaged in projects
for multimedia: Think home theater machines or video processing machines.
The newer kernels have been an engineering headache for me.
