... again, answering my own question(s) ... wikipedia saves the day ... 
Arial is so bound up with MS - sort of like eating too much cheese ... 
that seems to answer that, eh?  So probably the OOo document with Arial 
in it, started life on as an MS W doc?  Probably.  Sigh.
