[NTLUG:Discuss] Flash audio probs (or Audio probs in general)

This is probably not related but...

Recently I upgraded to a new motherboard that has onboard 7.1 sound. Now, When I have amarok open, MIDI files open and play in timidity, but the sound is moved from the L-R out to some other jack (not the light green, but the black or orangish jack). When no other sound app is running, I (sometimes) get the MIDI file to play from the same speaker jacks as they used to, but not always. I suspect in most cases some process remains from an app that timidity sees speakers 1,2 busy so it configures itself to the next available ones (which I don't have plugged in.)

To Fred's subject: (flash audio) when this happens look at running apps in your process table and see how many iterations of sound apps you have running. Browser plugins are notorious for hanging out tying up resources after you browse away from the page. 3.0.x is older, I'm betting updating to the current firefox for linux (3.5.6 here on PCLinux, and I may be a couple weeks out of date on my updates here...) will fix you right up.

Back to sound in general: Is there a way to tell KDE or the sound system that I only have 2 speakers? Can I disable 7.1 sound at boot with some fancy schmancy boot parms?

(PCLinux 2009.2, KDE 3.5.10, apt to current).
