[NTLUG:Discuss] linux movie question

OK - from audio to video ...
We have an old Cannon Supershot A70 that will shoot in movie mode, and 
it produces *.avi files
Any advice for a video editor and also probably for saving/converting 
the files in something like mp3 - or isn't that a good idea?

PS:  no budget for a new camera just now, so we have to work with what
