Howdy,
  I don't have a version that old any more.  I have been updating
machines lately.  In Ubuntu Jaunty, which uses Gnome 2.22, you can set a
number of the fonts using Appearance Preferences.  You get to that from
System/Preferences/Appearance.  I think there was a similar facility in
the prior version.  In that program, if I adjust the Application Font,
it seems to do what you ask.
