You may try the xserver 'vesa'. If you can get vesa working (and it normally does with an nvidia driver,) the Vesa server should allow you be able to change resolutions at the least. the FB server maps your screen in like a jpeg image and updates the picture in software, then writes the picture to the your screen. VESA on the other hand is the minimum standard for all video monitors, and includes pallets, box updates, etc. If your fb server is working, it is very likely that vesa will as well, and provide more features.
It is very unlikely that you will get a 2nd video display through your VGA port with anything besides the nvidia driver. However, you may be able to see a ghost copy of the primary display on the vga port using the vesa driver. I make that statement from experience with several other nvidia video cards in the 59xx to 96xx range. However, every video card and every revision of each distro has it's own completely unique experience to setting up the video, so I have no guidance for you beyond 'vesa should work'.
