I would hope that there would be a secure portal from which I can surf securely.

I guess I'm showing my ignorance with regard to VPN and Linux. With
regard to VPN I have only experience from my work where I would log on
with my Windows PC to the corporate network using a VPN client to do
work securely on the network or sometimes to go off site to other web
sites.
Since I have retired I have used a free VPN service for Windows called
Hotspot Shield which allowed me to sit in McDonalds or Starbucks and
access their server knowing that nobody in McDonalds or Starbucks is
able to discern my communications. From that Hotspot Shield portal I
can go out to other websites securely.
I've put Windows away and have decided that Ubuntu offers a much safer
environment. I'm so tired on the constant updating with a PC running
Windows! Now, I find that getting a similar VPN service may be a
problem.
The problem may be that I don't understand OpenVPN. If I recall
correctly, Hotspot Shield uses OpenVPN to connect to their server(s).

I'll certainly check it out OpenVPN.
I'm thinking that I may have to get a desktop PC and run Ubuntu with
Hamachi as Ralph Green does, though finding a service like Hotspot
Shield for Linux would be easier for me.
As I send this I want you to know that I don't email to sites like
this often so I'm not aware of protocol. My apologies if I have made
any error.
