OK, I don't run Ubuntu, but I do run a HP LJ 4M+ (close cousin).  When 
you say "...installed the HP driver as I had before...", I might ask 
which driver?

I have HP Device Manager running my newer printer, but for the 4M+ I use 
the HP driver furnished with the distro (Mandriva 2008, in this case).  
I have found that the HP Device Manager does bad things for the older 
printer(s).
