Howdy,
I never add myself to the lp group and I print to a HP Laserjet from
several versions of Ubuntu with no problems.
How is your printer connected? I usually setup printers as network
printers, and that may affect my results. Is your printer connected to
a USB port, a printer port, or a network port? I know there are other
choices, but they are much less common.
If it is a network connected printer, how are you trying to print to
it? Are you using a JetDirect connection, LPD, or what? Personally, I
like the JetDirect. You can pick up used ones cheap on ebay. They
convert a serial or parallel port printer to a network printer. They
have some vulnerabilities, and I would not expose them to the internet,
but they work well for your home LAN.
I don't print much these days and don't even have a printer setup at
home. So, I may not be able to help you. But, telling us more about
the printer connection may let someone else help.
Good luck,
Ralph
