1. "Working" usually means working with a particular distribution.  And every
Linux distribution SHOULD have a Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) that can be
updated somehow.

2. There is also smolt... many distributions have the tool to populate the smolt
db, some even run it as a part of successful install.
