On my machine (Fedora 14) I have fat, vfat, msdos

Try:

find /lib/modules/*/kernel/fs | grep fat

to see what fat drivers are in your kernel

I only have to:

[wwalker at speedy ~] [] $ sudo mount -o loop disk1.img /mnt/floppy
[wwalker at speedy ~] [] $ mount | grep floppy
/home/wwalker/disk1.img on /mnt/floppy type vfat (rw,loop=/dev/loop2)
[wwalker at speedy ~] [] $ ls /mnt/floppy
ATTRIB.EXE    DEBUG.EXE     EGA2.CP_    ISO.CP_       NETWORKS.TXT  SCANDISK.EXE
AUTOEXEC.BAT  DEFRAG.EXE    EGA3.CP_    KEYB.COM      NLSFUNC.EXE   SCANDISK.INI
CHKDSK.EXE    DEFRAG.HL_    EMM386.EX_  KEYBOARD.SYS  PACKING.LST   SETUP.EXE
