[NTLUG:Discuss] Drive Icons on Desktop missing in Kubuntu 8.04.1

I don't have a real idea of what they really are, but....

There are drive, thumb drive, CD/DVD icons that pop up when such things 
are plugged in with Kubuntu. Worked fine until my wife's Sansa Fuze had 
some issues with the expansion SD card. Afterwords, no more popup icons. 
They were coming up on the desktop.

What calls these items, how do I get them back and is there a way to 
keep these from going away again?
