I think someone else already pointed to printing the filled out pdf into a
new pdf. In openSUSE KDE it is built in: just select print to file and
then select pdf as the file type (default is .ps).
As a trick sometimes when a pdf is too large to email I will print it to a
new pdf with different settings, like downsample images to 72dpi. That
almost always preserves viewing features but will strip out forms and other
automation features.
Why adobe chose not saving as their time-to-buy decision point is not
entirely clear to me since that is not made consistent across their pdf
products.
