I too would like to follow your progress if possible, but....

There was I guy I met that was on the IT staff for Weatherford ISD who was
pretty much running the show because of his Linux expertise. He was even in
charge of ordering PCs for staff and classrooms as well as heading up the
server administration tasks for their numerous servers. A couple of us from
FWLUG visited him in Weatherford and he invited us into the server room. He
showed us a batch of new server equipment. WISD was in the process of
overhauling the IT infrastructure and his crowning jewel was the asterisk
VOIP system he was putting together. There was OSS galore and it appeared
that WISD was very happy with his OSS initiatives because they were clearly
saving $$$ in the process of a costly overhaul. Now, this was in the
neighborhood of 3 years ago and I do not remember the guy's name or if he
even still works there but will try and find out. If he's still there, he
may have valuable experience to share with you. He was also in touch with
OSS initiatives in other school districts. I'll try and find out if he's
still there and if we can get in touch with him. I've already emailed one
of the other guys that was there. If I hear anything, I'll let you know.
