Different USB flash dries have different transfer rates. Some are dog slow, others are really fast. You should Google the brand and size (or model number) of your device and see what others have reported. 

Not saying this is your problem, but it is the most common cause.

Distro is CentOS 5.5.  Writing to an 8GB USB stick (re-formatted as 
ext2) is taking minutes to write a few megabytes.  I thought maybe it 
was konqueror so I tried cp at the command prompt with the same result.  
Any ideas?
