Thank you all for your help on this ... the explanations made the 
problem crystal clear ... he noise is gone now, and red light working as 
expected too.

All the problems were related to a noise generating cheap wall wart.

Solution?  A not so cheap, regulated and filtered, wall wart.  I am a 
happy camper, especially since I understand what happened ... thank you 
all again
