Not long after Gmail came out there was a filesystem definition that would allow the use of a Gmail account as a file system.  That is, on a linux box you saw a drive with limited space, and the filesystem driver stored the information on a Gmail account.  and at that time (2002?) I decided that cloud (then known as a virtual drive), was about what fred describes.

Why anyone would agree to such lack of privacy is beyond me.  At least with webmail, there are supposed 'protections' against privacy invasions like this built into law.
