"Wireless G Works OK for me" means:

2 laptops (1 running youtube) + Wii (running netflix) at the same time.  3 streams of anything doesn't work, and 2 streams of youtube is spotty. 

However, add in a single Ipod touch with 7 email accounts configured to to auto update, and 1 laptop can't get youtube reliably, much less keep 2 streams running concurrently.  Take the email accounts out of the ipod and no more issues.  I suspect a long running hyperactivity bug in the email system of iOS is causing AT&T most of their bandwidth crisis.  If apple were open source, it would have been solve long ago. As it is, whoever is sitting on the iphone/ipod email system is probably more worried about a potential or recent promotion than 25% of the nation's internet bandwidth.
