Charles:
I posted the question and this comment is not going to address your post and it may or may not agree with
the perspectives of the forum but I just feel compelled to write this.
What I know for sure is that some PC's because of how they are put together (poor phraseology) are not as
Linux compatible as others. This Toshiba L675D is certainly a case in point.
To begin with out of the box there was 3 NTFS partitions, one being a hidden recovery partition.
Installing Suse could only be accomplished by acpi=off. Ubuntu 10.10 could not be loaded under any
circumstances and I believe it was a kernel issue, but 10.04 installed effortlessly.
A number of other distros would load to the kernel but freeze at that point with blinking cursor and word ready.
I thought win 7 might be part of the problem so out of frustration I removed it totally and find myself still confined to 10.04
but the PC now up and downloads faster.
I think it was Robert who stated that after installing Suse using acpi=off thay my inability to get my wireless network
recognized was I needed to compile some drivers and I just could not wrap my 80 year old brain around that endeavor.
So maybe at some point I will take it to a meeting and load it again and let the network Guru's get it on line.
I will however live without windows now that I realize how great it is.
Again thanks for everyones input
Allen
