Works just fine for me:
$ runlevel
N 3
$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.32-26-generic root=/dev/mapper/rootvg-rootlv ro 3
$ cat /etc/issue.net
Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
