[NTLUG:Discuss] wired connection challenge

 I have installed dreamlinux that to this point defies recognition of my wireless network.
My understanding and it might well be in error is that one can also have a wired connection from a wireless router.
I can boot to 10.04 insert Ethernet cable from my ATT 2 wire router and immediately see auto ethO in my connection options.
However when I boot to DL and either insert Ethernet before or after the boot I see no indication of wired connection.
Any how to or suggestions appreciated
