I know your problem looks like it's solved, but I do have another
comment. According to some googling results I found last night, it
might be a problem of insufficient power. When you were having your
problem, did your dmesg display anything like
ata2: hard resetting link
ata2: port is slow to respond, please be patient (Status 0xff)
ata2: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps
ata2: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata2: reset failed, giving up
I get lots of messages like that. Tonight I'm going to find a bigger
power supply and see if that solves my problem.
