Aren't all NICs nowzadays 10/100/1000?
Newegg has new Intel adapters for $28 shipped -> http://goo.gl/YreQH
froogle shows as low as $10 for off brands.

Jeff Burns (in the Open Source group) used these in his home ESX VMware lab recently.
They connect to a NFS export, tweaking default linux kernel settings is recommended. :)
