[NTLUG:Discuss] no sound in ubuntu 12.04

Hello - All,
  I'm having problems with ubuntu 12.04 NO SOUND!!  That seems to be the 
problem on various forums I've visited.
Tried all their suggestions, no fun yet...    This is a clean/fresh  
install.
   Running win 7-64bit on virtual box..Every earlier linux version works 
fine--mint 11/12 and ubuntu 11.10.
   When I open sound properties, I see for built in audio , only s/pdif 
and mic options available.  That's not for
regular computer speakers??
   Even alsamixer is all open. lspci recognizes my intell sound card.  
Nothing is muted where I know to check?
