It's a widget. Often times the default View for KDE is a Desktop view with a
View Folder widget over the Desktop folder in your home dir.
I prefer to make change the desktop to a Folder View desktop, where the desktop
is the Folder View and it's the Desktop folder.. makes the icons look the way
they did back in the 3.5 days... (e.g. icons on a desktop).
Usually, doing a right click will show you what kind of desktop view you have in
place. So, in my case, when I right click the last entry in the popup menu is
for Folder View Settings (since I use the Folder View as my desktop). If I
click that, I can actually change my desktop view back to Desktop if I wanted to
.. and then I could add a Folder View widget back that holds my Desktop folder
(the box thing with the file icons in it).
I may not be explaining this well and my terms are probably "off"... but
hopefully it points you in the right direction.
There's a lot of stuff in KDE4.. like activities (the ability to create specific
views.. multiple desktop portals)... it can get complicated.
