could get them working at all.

Check out Linux Mint.  I found it easier than Ubuntu (which mostly "just
worked" for my HP Laptops).  I found Mint to be easier to get up and
running than Ubuntu.  It also has a "LiveDVD" so you can "try before you
buy" to see if it will work for you.  The one "gotcha", there is a
utility for downloading the proprietary drivers that you will probably
need to use.  It automatically starts, you just need to select and click
"install".
