[NTLUG:Discuss] New hardware for Linux

Looking to replace my mostly office automation home PC. Comparing Intel
i3 2100 vs AMD FX-4300, seems their "real" performance is close to
equivalent (within a few percent) in simple situations. However, I would
like to play with virtualization. What I'm reading is that AMD's FX
series performance varies significantly compared to Intel from
single-threaded (poor) to multi-threaded (good). With the cost
differential being $10-20 or $20-40 including motherboard it doesn't
seem that should be the issue. Looking for any other input before
making a decision.

Also, any input on motherboard quality would be appreciated, right now
I'm looking $50-$100 cost solutions unless someone can point out a
significant reason to go higher. I'm seeing ASRock, ASUS, BIOSTAR,
Gigabyte, Intel and MSI as possibilities.
