I now have Verizon and am using FIOS, unlike another post, they provided 
a "box", specifically a Westell A90-9100EM15 10.  Cable on one side, 
Ethernet on the other.  From the house side it's an Ethernet 
connection.  You can run Windows/*NIX/OS-2/DOS/whatever. The "box" may 
have a firewall, I don't care, I'm running my own as well.
