Thanks for all of the feedback from the group.  The way that Verizon 
described the hookup it sounded like their router was required, like 
the DSL modem.

The reason I hadn't switched from DSL to FIOS earlier is Verizon 
didn't offer business class service in my area.  I'm not sure when 
they started offering it, but they do now.  The business bundle is 
more expensive than the residential, but I get the static IP and no 
server hosting restrictions, so its worth it.
