As far as a Linux distribution to use, I usually use CentOS when
I need to run a Linux. Primarily because of the derivation from
RHEL, and the general RHEL support by third party applications.
Not to mention the 3-5 year support life cycle on the major
versions.

But you've already said RHEL derivatives are not an option.
