[NTLUG:Discuss] Older laptop distro and (separately) remote control solution

Looking for two separate things.  First, recommendations of a 
lighter-weight distribution for a laptop that's five years old. I've 
mostly worked with Red Hat and SuSE so would prefer something in either 
of those realms if possible.

Second, looking for an open source alternative to a remote control 
program such as VNC or service such as LogMeIn.  I would use VNC but the 
free version uses unencrypted communication.

Ant ideas on either of these would be appreciated.
