Leroy,
  I will recommend the obvious.  Have you tried the LXDE respin of
Fedora?  A 5 year old laptop should run it fine.  Actually, a 5 year
old laptop means a 2010 model and that probably have a fine cpu.  It
may just need a memory upgrade and that should be under $20.
