How about creating videos with transitions and effects using 
OpenShot Video Editor?  (I use this tool several times a year.  And if I can 
find a meeting date/time when I'm available to present, I'd be glad to give a 
presentation about it.)

I'd also be interested in 3D modeling software for Linux (e.g., for 3D printing).
