Hi Stephen,
I had a very similar problem installing mythbuntu on a new box about 2
years ago.
My problem had to do with "secure boot" - turned it off in the BIOS.
And problem with the GUID partition table (GPT)
I removed all partitions and used parted, then mklabel gpt, then
re-installed.
After that it booted normally.
Just my experiance,
