Eric answered the first two questions, for the third the answer is Yes.
I replaced a few hundred MB drive with a terabyte one and did just that
on openSUSE. I did have a few "slivers" of hard disk space between
existing multiple partitions, possibly because I didn't think about
Eric's advice. I suspect even Windows Disk Manager could do the job
(oh, that's right, you did say Vista, Hmmm...).
