xargs could be your friend here but there is one little gotcha... sox requires an output file name as the last argument, otherwise something like this would give you a lot of flexibility:
ls filename*.wav | sort [ sort options ] | xargs -d '\n' sox
A quick kludge like creating an empty file that will always be the last line output by sort will fix that problem.
for example:
touch zzz.wavls filename*.wav | sort [ sort options ] | xargs -d '\n' sox

FWIW, If you're using 'bash' or 'ksh' to number files with
leading zeros in a loop can be done something like this:

for i in {00..33}

do

    echo Burp${i}.wav

done
